The blessing of family…..
It was a table for eight…..mom, dad and six children. The children ranged in age from approximately 10 years old to one year old. Each child sat happily in his or her chair, quietly drawing, joining the conversation among them and patiently waiting for their meals. Mom and Dad were very organized and very much at ease as the family enjoyed their meal.
Our tables shared a server. We asked the server if she would anonymously deliver the “rock” and scripture (3 John 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth) to the family’s table. She smiled and seemed eager to be a part of the surprise.
The rock and scripture were delivered and we eavesdropped waiting for the reaction.
Mom looked confused for an instant and then smiled. As she shared the unexpected gift with her family, she said, “Kids, this is very special. The rock says “you are loved” and there is a verse. Listen as I read it to you.” She and Dad exchanged a meaningful look and they began gathering their family to be on their way.
When the family returns home from vacation, will the rock and scripture be kept in the kitchen windowsill as a reminder of their trip? Will it be placed in one of the children’s rooms? Will Mom keep it on her dresser as a daily reminder? Will they decide to pass it on to another family?
Again, we will never know the impact, but we do believe this family was reminded of God’s great love for each of them.
