Let Your Light Shine!

Category: My Story

In our everyday routine, do we as believers live in such a way that others see Jesus through us?  Do others hear Jesus when we speak?

During her high school graduation, Valedictorian Lydia Owens delivered a powerful and moving speech sharing how she has found strength and value in her faith.  It is admirable how she didn’t hesitate to express her beliefs to her family, classmates, school faculty, and community.

Another example of young people sharing their faith happened during the College World Series.  The Oklahoma Sooners girls’ softball team had an amazing season and recently won the College World Series.  In an ESPN interview, they were asked how they handled the pressure of being ranked number 1 and the projected winner.  Three teammates answered that their joy comes from so much more than softball…..”Joy from the Lord is the only lasting joy”.  Their team motto is “Eyes Up” as they “fix their eyes on Christ”.

These demonstrations of faith caused me to contemplate how much do we share our faith?  Do we openly discuss our beliefs or do we hesitate?  Do we reflect the Holy Spirit living within us?  Are we filled with so much joy that we can’t contain it?  How refreshing and encouraging to hear young people talking freely and passionately about their faith!

Recently, my niece received a message from a high school classmate.  The message expressed the classmate’s gratitude and admiration for my niece.  Apparently, she had admired Lauren throughout school for her kindness, gentle spirit, and caring way.  My niece was surprised and touched by the message; she had no idea she had such an impact on her classmate.

How often are we showing others our faith even when we aren’t aware?  Are we demonstrating a kindness, a gentle spirit, and a caring way?

Several months ago, I was going through the TSA line at the airport.  I was still several people behind in line when I made eye contact with the woman who would be checking my license and boarding pass.  She looked as if she had “had a day” and I smiled at her sympathetically.  As I reached her and handed her my information, she looked directly at the cross around my neck and then into my eyes.  We both smiled, for with no words needing to be spoken, we knew we were sisters in Christ.

In a world where life is fast paced and everyone is in a rush, do we take the time to slow down, make eye contact with strangers, perhaps share an encouraging word?

Jesus tells us to let our light shine…..don’t put our light under a basket…..

If there was ever a time this world could use your light…..it is now!!  Show your portion of the world how “bright” you are, beam with the joy and peace that is within you and let the light of Jesus shine through you!

We never know who we are impacting…..who we may be influencing…..who may desperately need to see our light.

Almighty God, may I live in such a way that when others see me…..they see you.  When others hear me……they hear you.  Shine your light through me.  Amen

Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.  Matthew 5:16

For at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.  Walk as children of light.   Ephesians 5:8

We have all heard this phrase.....but I can tell you, with certainty, I have watched my life pass before my eyes. After my mother's passing, I took on the project of scanning her photographs from the years 1953 to 2015.  My mother was known for documenting every event...
